The Arc Volunteers at Grassroots

Bill Wedeking, Deb Popiel and Andrea Ingram
Volunteer Bill Wedeking from The Arc of Howard County talks with (from l.) Deputy Director of Administration Deb Popiel and Executive Director Andrea Ingram during his Friday morning volunteer shift at Grassroots.

The Arc of Howard County has established a relationship with Grassroots and is providing volunteers to help in a variety of ways, including providing two meals per month to people who are staying in the shelter. It can be challenging to prepare meals for over 50 people, and The Arc volunteers benefit by what has become “on the job” training, as well as the opportunity of giving back to neighbors in need.

One of Grassroots’ most beloved volunteers, also from The Arc, is Bill Wedeking. Bill lives in Oakland Mills with two other individuals with disabilities. Since he is in a wheel chair, a staff person at The Arc gets Bill out into the community every day, including to Grassroots. Executive Director Andrea Ingram says, “Bill is a delightful presence and greeter at Grassroots. We all look forward to seeing him on Fridays. He says we are all his angels, but he is really a Grassroots angel!”
