Glenwood Middle School 6th graders recently delivered boxes of food and other supplies to Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center for families being temporarily housed in area motels pending availability of more permanent accommodations.  The students delivering the 20 boxes and gift cards to Grassroots’ Columbia offices were selected based on essays they wrote explaining why they wanted to help.  The students were accompanied by Guidance Counselor Kelli Brandt and math teacher Stephanie Luddy.

The students also raised $975 for Grassroots by collecting money in their homerooms and through other fundraising activities. This is the fourth year that Glenwood Middle School has participated in Change Matters, the student community service and philanthropy initiative the benefits people served by the crisis center.

Grassroots provides the county’s only emergency shelter and 24-hour crisis intervention services. Professional crisis counselors staff Grassroots’ 24-hour hotline; see walk-in clients in need of immediate counseling; operate the Mobile Crisis Team, which responds to community emergencies, and manage the county’s emergency shelter for homeless men, women and families.
