Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center is offering a 2-afternoon Mental Health First Aid course on June 26 and 27, from noon-4 p.m., at the Grassroots offices, 6700 Freetown Road in Columbia. Mental Health First Aid helps people assist someone experiencing a mental health related crisis. Course participants learn about risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. Participants must attend both sessions. For register, contact Tamara Van Newkirk, 410-531-6677, tamara@grassrootscrisis.org.
Grassroots provides the county’s only emergency shelter and 24-hour crisis intervention services. Professional crisis counselors staff Grassroots’ 24-hour hotline; see walk-in clients in need of immediate counseling; operate the Mobile Crisis Team, which responds to community emergencies, and manage the county’s emergency shelter for homeless men, women and families.
